This is a helpful post, apart from saving money, if you are renting you can use the saved money to buy your very own house. Of course buying a house is expensive, but renting one is going to cost you a lot more after a few years.

Transformers? How about all those “bricks” that electronic things use: cell chargers, wireless phones, computer speakers, and all the rest. New ones (called “switching transformers”) use barely any electricity. Older ones thrift savings plan (usually much bigger) suck watts all the time, hence the nickname “vampire” transformers. Touch them — if they’re warm, they’re old ones. I unplugged or got rid of five that we didn’t need. There are a few from computers that I do need,

I wonder if Atlas could be used to teach Cappuccino. I am trying to get my head around Objective-J and it looks like Atlas could be a great way to learn how it works. I remember back in the late 90's using various tools that generated HTML and how they helped me learn HTML. Now I would never use an hrsaccount automatic HTML generator as hand coding is the only way to get it right. But the WYSIWYG paradigm to learning HTML was invaluable. I think Atlas might just be the ticket to getting people onto Objective J.

Hi Tom, you write very good article about energy saving. In the company I work, I've been challanged to find the opportunity to reduce energy usage. We started by replacing all bigger wattage with lower wattage lamps without sacrifice the safety issue. We also put skylight on the ceiling at particular area so we don't turn on lights during daytime. But the most important thing is to change people mindset, to give them awareness that even small initiative can make a big impact such as turn-off unused electric devices.

Great tips, I could use a monitor like that myself. I still haven't got one and I don't like my electricity bill either. It's time for a change, I am thinking about renewing my appliances from whirlpool parts as well.

I heard that Playstation 3 consumes five times more energy than a medium sized refrigerator. That's huge. We should switch it off when we don't use it.

Awesome and thank you for the tips to saving on electricity costs each month. Do you know if there are any ways to save on the biggest expense of them all: air conditioning? Other than using less, is there any device that helps with this?

My husband and I have been gradually taking steps to reduce our power useage and simplify our home and this is one of the next things I was considering. Its tough to balance what’s actually helpful in your home in the long run with the recent boom of “green” consumer goods.

Many people think that all the chargers they have around the house can't consume too much and by replacing them they barely save on their energy bill. Buying new ones is expensive but on the long run, we might end up saving a lot. You are right, heat is a good indicator. I just passed every electrical appliance in the house to see if there's any heat coming from them.
